For many shoppers, the hardest part is not deciding whether to visit a dispensary. It is deciding what category to explore once they get there. Product formats can feel unfamiliar until they are explained in plain language.
Flower refers to the traditional dried cannabis form. Pre-rolls offer convenience, while vaporizers, edibles, and concentrates each bring different shopping considerations. The point is not that one format is universally better than another. The point is that different customers value different experiences, routines, and levels of convenience.
Educational content helps lower the temperature around the buying process. When people understand the categories, they are more likely to shop thoughtfully and ask better questions in store.
Flower
Flower is the dried cannabis plant material sold by weight. Labels commonly show the net weight and cannabinoid potency as a percentage. Product names may include a cultivar name. Read the package for potency, producer information, warnings, storage directions, and the lot or testing link.
Pre-rolls
Pre-rolls contain cannabis flower prepared in rolling paper. They may be sold individually or in multipacks. Check the number of pre-rolls, total net weight, potency information, ingredients, and whether the label identifies any added material. Keep the package closed and stored according to its directions.
Edibles and beverages
Edibles include solid foods, chews, lozenges, and other orally ingested products; beverages are another orally ingested format. Labels generally identify the total THC in the package and the amount per serving, along with the number of servings. Review the ingredient and allergen information carefully. New York labels for orally ingested products include a warning that effects may be delayed.
Vape products
Vape products may include cartridges, pods, or all-in-one devices. Packaging should identify the net quantity, potency, ingredients, processor, warnings, and testing information. Do not use a device that is damaged or leaking, and follow the product’s storage and use directions.
Concentrates
Concentrates are processed cannabis products that can have high cannabinoid concentrations. The label is the place to confirm the format, potency, net quantity, ingredients or processing information where applicable, warnings, and storage conditions. A high number on a label should not be treated as a promise of quality or suitability.
Topicals
Topicals are intended for external application. Follow the label instructions and do not eat or smoke a product labeled for topical use. Review the ingredient list, usage directions, warnings, and storage information, especially if you have known sensitivities.
What to compare across formats
Instead of asking which format is best, compare the information that is actually available:
- Product format and net quantity
- THC and CBD amounts
- Serving size and servings per package, where applicable
- Ingredients and allergens
- Required warnings
- Storage directions and expiration date
- Processor, lot information, and Certificate of Analysis link
